In 1973, director Norman Jewison, directed the motion picture version of Jesus Christ Superstar, starring Ted Neeley. The film was a adaptation of the rock opera of the same name, based on the last weeks before the crucifixion of Jesus. It was shot on location in Israel.

Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson were nominated for two 1974 Golden Globe Award for their portrayals of Jesus and Judas.
